Traditional Laser
Laser uses a single concentrated wavelength (755nm Alexandrite or 810nm Diode) to deliver a 70°C heat spike directly to the melanin in the hair follicle. It’s precise and effective on dark, coarse hair โ but the sudden temperature spike registers as a sharp stinging sensation (6โ8/10), and shot-by-shot stamping makes large areas slow.
Risk increases significantly on darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV+) because the skin’s own melanin absorbs the energy competing with the follicle, raising burn risk.
Standard IPL
IPL emits a broad spectrum of light (420โ1200nm) filtered to target hair follicles at 65โ70°C. It can address hair removal, pigmentation, and vascular concerns in one session. Still uses the stamp method, so treatment times are moderate (60โ90 min for full legs), and the single high-energy flash is more comfortable than laser but still noticeable โ particularly on sensitive areas.
Why filters matter
Professional IPL uses cut-off filters (640nm or 690nm) to block shorter wavelengths that are too superficial for hair removal and can burn darker skin. At-home IPL devices lack this โ a key safety difference.
SHR (Super Hair Removal)
SHR is IPL with a fundamentally different delivery method. Instead of one high-energy pulse, it fires 3โ10 rapid pulses per second while the handpiece glides continuously over the skin. Each pulse adds a small amount of heat until the follicle reaches 45°C โ enough to destroy the stem cells in the follicle’s bulge region where regrowth originates.
Bulb vs Bulge
Traditional laser and IPL target the bulb (the bottom of the follicle) with an intense spike. SHR targets the bulge โ midway up the follicle, where the stem cells that regenerate hair actually live. Sustained lower heat at this site prevents regrowth regardless of which phase the hair is in, making SHR effective across a broader range of hair cycle stages.
Because the heat builds gradually rather than spiking, pain receptors don’t register it the same way. Clients consistently rate SHR at 1โ2/10 โ most describe it as a warm gliding sensation. The In-Motion technique also makes treatment 30โ40% faster than stamping.
Fake tan: hard stop
Never use fake tan or self-tanner before any IPL or SHR treatment. The pigment deposited on the skin surface absorbs the light energy and causes burns, regardless of technology. Wait at least 2 weeks and ensure all residue is fully exfoliated before your session.

SHR’s lower energy per pulse reduces the risk of skin melanin competing with follicle melanin for light absorption โ the mechanism that causes burns on darker skin types with traditional laser.
Note: No light-based technology works on blonde, grey, red or white hair โ all require melanin in the hair shaft to absorb the energy.
